National Funding Formula & Preventing Deficits - 1.00pm - 3.30pm
We have worked with Schools Financial Success to create two bespoke training sessions on school finance. The sessions will look at Mastering School Budget Management and National Funding Formula & Preventing Deficits. Both sessions will provide a mix of presentations, activities and case studies.  
Session 1: Mastering School Budget Management

This session will give an overview of all aspects of how to successfully manage a school budget.  The activities will look at embedding a value for money culture in your school and minimising risk when setting and controlling a budget. Topics to be covered:

  • Financial leadership
  • Legal requirements
  • Delegated and devolved funding
  • Approaches to budget preparation
  • Budget planning cycle
  • Available revenue funding and sources of income
  • Intelligent financial planning
  • Forecasting teacher pay budgets
Session 2: National Funding Formula & Preventing Deficits
This session will look at the introduction of the NFF, strategic financial planning, budget reviews, scenario planning and a focus on what you can control in a time of uncertainty and change. Topics to be covered:
 
  • What is the NFF?
  • Overview of the individual NFFs
  • What does it mean for Cornwall schools?
  • Managing the impact to prevent deficits
  • Forecasting Future Funding (the missing piece of the jigsaw)
  • Fundamental budget review.
Should there be new relevant information published by government before the course date, this will be incorporated into the content.
Costs: £65+VAT per session, or £115+VAT for two sessions, for CAPH members. This includes a free paperback copy of ‘School Budget Mastery’.

About the Trainers
 
The trainer will be Julie Cordiner, Education Funding Specialist, who has 35 years’ experience in education finance, regularly delivers training to heads, SBLs and governors and speaks at national conferences. The material will be jointly developed by Julie Cordiner and Nikola Flint, Director of Corporate Services in a large secondary school and CFO of the multi-academy trust (MAT), who has 16 years’ experience in school business management.  Julie and Nikola will speak to contacts in Cornwall to ensure all training fits the local context.
