Wave Multi-Academy Trust

The Department for Education said today that a strong multi-academy trust has been identified to be the new sponsor of SchoolsCompany Trust’s three academies in Devon.

It is the intention that Wave, which until today has been known as Acorn Academy Cornwall, will formally become the sponsor of Central Devon Academy, North Devon Academy, and South and West Devon Academy in the autumn.

SchoolsCompany Trust has been under interim leadership since January, with a number of improvements made to the three academies in Devon. These have been delivered by staff at the academies, by the Interim Chief Executive of SchoolsCompany Trust, Angela Barry, and by ACE Schools Multi-Academy Trust, working under a Service Level Agreement covering North Devon Academy and Central Devon Academy.

Wave Multi-Academy Trust is well-placed to build on these improvements. It specialises in alternative provision (AP) and currently leads AP academies and The Community and Hospital Education Service (CHES), a medical alternative provision academy. Two of its academies are rated Outstanding by Ofsted, with the other five judged to be Good, making Wave the most successful AP academy trust in the country by Ofsted outcome. It has a strong track record of achieving impressive outcomes with their pupils in terms of qualifications, re-integration and positive post-16 outcomes.

Robert Gasson, Chief Executive of Wave Multi-Academy Trust, said:

“We are delighted to have been approved by the Department for Education and the Regional Schools Commissioner for the South West to sponsor these three academies. Today is a new chapter for our Trust, as we change our name to Wave, and expand into Devon.

“We are committed to giving pupils the very best education so that they fulfil their potential and can achieve in all areas. We are looking forward to supporting the students, and working collaboratively with their parents and the academies’ wider communities.”

Angela Barry, Interim Chief Executive of SchoolsCompany Trust since the start of 2018, said:

"I am pleased that a new sponsor has been identified for the three Devon academies. Over the last few months we have been working hard to improve safeguarding and other key priority areas at the three academies, and they are now in much better shape than six months ago. I would like to thank ACE Schools Multi-Academy Trust for the work they have done. School improvement does not happen overnight but progress has been good and there are solid foundations in place. I look forward to seeing the progress continuing.”
