The Writing Framework

Many thanks to Vanessa Morely (Kernow English Hub) who hosted our Topical Thursday with an update on the Writing Framework

Whilst it is currently non statutory, the guidance clearly and explicitly states that schools need to be developing and embedding their approach to and sequence of 'writing' across the school. This ranges from transcription (handwriting and spelling), through to grammar and sentence structures. Very much the same as the work colleagues have done over the years to develop 'problem solving' or 'mastery' in mathematics, the same now needs to be considered for Writing.

Writing - FREE Signposts and Resources

In addition to using the Kernow English Hub support, many schools will also be using established resources which support Writing very well. Others who are looking to enhance or develop their current provision may find the following signposts useful - for small schools/mixed age to larger settings. These are all FREE and accessible to all - effective and easy to use documents:

1. Nick Hart - Concept of a Sentence

This guidance provides a structure EYFS to Y6+ that schools can use to 'build up' the complexity of sentence structures alongside developing grammatical themes and concepts.

Concept of a Sentence Reception to Y2

KS2 Sentence Development - Putting Sentence Writing at the Heart of the Curriculum

2. Pie Corbett - Writing Progression documents - The Early Years & Primary Phase

Many schools in Cornwall and across the UK use Talk for Writing (TfW) as part of their writing curriculum and lesson delivery. These guides are really useful even if you don't use TfW as they provide a structure and sequence:

Writing Progression - Guide for Early Years (3-5)

Writing Progression - Primary Phase (4-11)

3. Dandelion Learning - Tre & Pet

Dandelion Learning is a CAPH Preferred Partner and during the 2025/26 Academic Year, all LA schools have full access to everything on the platform. This includes a range of support for Writing. Many Trusts in Cornwall are also taking advantage of group subscriptions and Tre and Pet regularly host FREE webinars too. Do get in touch with them to discuss your school's writing needs - treandpet@dandelionlearning.co.uk
