Fluency and Phonics for Maths Benchmarks | Oxford Maths Mastery Framework | OUP
Build the foundations and fluency all children need for success in mathematics. The Oxford University Press have just released their updated thinking around this as part of their Mastery Framework guidance. (See attached).Phonics for Maths is a systematic approach to securing the crucial number facts children need to access the mathematical learning they are entitled to. Most curriculums take this to mean addition and subtraction facts up to 20 and multiplicative facts up to 12 times 12. However, this goes beyond factual recall – requiring flexible reasoning and problem-solving skills and the embedding of number sense, conceptual understanding and regular opportunities to apply learning.

A systematic approach, as with phonics, gives children a feeling of control over their learning and its purpose, and help them develop metacognition. Fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics is something every child can and must achieve. To secure crucial number facts and fluency, the approach needs to be designed to support success for all learners. There are a variety of programmes available to support a 'Phonics for Maths' approach. See the Maths Spotlight later in the bulletin with contact details for CODE Maths Hub among other signposts.
