Expressions of Interest Curriculum Kernewek Knowledge Mapping and Quality Assurance Group

Cornwall Council is seeking expressions of interest from educational professionals working in both the primary and secondary phase to contribute to the ongoing design and quality assurance of Curriculum Kernewek, through membership of its Knowledge Mapping and Quality Assurance Group.

What is Curriculum Kernewek?

The purpose of Curriculum Kernewek is to broaden the ways of viewing Cornwall and the ways of thinking about the Cornish experience.

The curriculum aims to help pupils to understand and celebrate the distinctive quality of living and learning in Cornwall in the twenty-first century, to identify their own sense of being Cornish, to enable them to investigate, understand and to develop agency around narratives about Cornwall and the Cornish and to therefore develop a heightened sense of belonging to their local community and the Duchy.

It also helps to foster in pupils an understanding of Cornwall’s history as an outward-looking and international Cornwall, promoting global citizenship, a concern for sustainable development and future aspirations for a green and digital future.

Where are we now?

Following public consultation, the Curriculum Kernewek has, in draft form:

- A purpose of study

- A set of overarching aims, developed across four strands

- For each strand, a set of attainment targets and subject content

What needs to happen next?

The work of the Curriculum Kernewek Knowledge Mapping and Quality Assurance Group is crucial to the next stage of the development of Curriculum Kernewek. It will work towards achieving milestone targets and actions that will take the Curriculum Kernewek from its current iteration in skeleton format to a coherent, progressive, sequenced, resourced curriculum; with schemes of work to support its delivery. It will help ensure that the curriculum is fit for launch in Cornish schools during the 2024-2025 academic year.

The work of the Group is governed by the attached Terms of Reference and interested parties should familiarise themselves with the intended work of the group, as well as understand the commitment of time and resource required.

We currently have vacancies, and are therefore particularly seeking, expressions of interest from practitioners with an interest and/or expertise in the following areas:

· Primary art

· Primary music

· Secondary art

· Secondary music

· Secondary history

· Secondary geography

Currently, five meetings of the Group are planned over the course of the remainder of the academic year, on the following dates:

Friday 9th February

Friday 1st March

Monday 25th March

Friday 3rd May

July (date TBC)

The time allocation for each meeting is one full day and they will be held in New County Hall, Truro. Lunch will be provided, as well as the cost of supply cover to schools.

Expressions of interest, or any further questions, should be sent, in the first instance, to Mark Corbett, Senior Education Effectiveness Officer and Curriculum Kernewek Project Lead on mark.corbett@cornwall.gov.uk. by Friday 2nd February.
